Wings for All

Wings for All program

Wings for All™ is a national initiative of The Arc that gives people with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to practice air travel before the day of a real trip. Airports are loud, crowded, and unpredictable—this program reduces anxiety by walking participants through each step with patience and support.

The Arc of Union/Cabarrus is proud to co-host Wings for All™ with Delta Air Lines and Charlotte Douglas International Airport, in partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The event is typically held each April during Autism Awareness Month, though dates may vary.

During the rehearsal, participants may:

  • Check in at the airline counter and receive a boarding pass
  • Go through TSA security screening with trained officers
  • Wait at the gate and board an aircraft (often without takeoff)
  • Practice finding seats, stowing carry-ons, and following crew instructions
  • Deplane and collect baggage in a calm, structured setting

Families, caregivers, and self-advocates gain confidence knowing what to expect. Airport and airline staff also build familiarity serving travelers with diverse needs—a benefit that extends far beyond event day.
